William was a bookkeeper and His religion was Presbyterian. [2]
In about 1874 he became ill with consumption (TB). His niece Fannie had it around the same time and passed away in 1876. He fought it for 3 years, but William James Duncan passed away on 6 Mar 1877 in Welland, Ontario, Canada. He was 32 years old. His brother George J Duncan from Drummondville registered the death on March 11th. [2] He was laid to rest in the Drummond Hill Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada on 9 Mar 1877.

March 9, 1877 - Wm. Duncan was buried on Friday in the afternoon at 3 o'clock. A large funeral and as a very stormy day snowing. Old ground north side next to Cole's vault. Undertaker - Chippawa. $2.50 paid.[3]
