James Duncan (named in Will) son of Marshall Duncan and Mary Ann Durron
James Duncan was born about 1755, probabley Rowan Co, North Carolina (vs Surry Co. vs Stokes County North Carolina.) [1]) Reportedly, he was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. [2][3]
James married Avarilla (Shelton) about 1774-1780 in North Carolina, probably Stokes Co. Avarilla, presumed daughter of John and Elizabeth Lawson. [4][3][1]
James died about 1840-1844 in Illinois, probably Menard County vs Sangamon (Menard formed 1839 from Sangamon). Avarilla died before 1840. Note: Find A Grave states that he died in 1844.[2] No will/probate record located to prove or disprove children, location or date. [5][4]
1751 Duncans on the Dan River, as "Marshall Doncom; John Doncom, This area actually may have been in what was Rowan Co. NC by 1753, but Rowan Co. is said to have been formed from Anson Co. rather than Granville. 1764 - Rowan Co NC (later Surry Co. then Stokes Co.)
In 1793 and 1795 James bought land on Snow Creek (Stokes County North Carolina) from John Shelton Sr. [6].
In 1801, James bought more land on Snow Creek [7].

James appears to be living with (son) Marshall & Hannah Duncan in 1840 census in Sangamon Co., Illinois, (census: age 80 to 90 bracket. (Probably was 85 years old)

IL in 1850 (pg. 238) in the household of Cynthia Vermillion 50 NC, and Pinckney (m) 18 KY, Sidney 16 KY, Martha 14, Susana 10, and Hairrett 7 IL, and Wm. Duncan 17 TN (probable Son of Marshall) and Ely Coffee 22 KY. (p1016 History of Sangamon indicates William F. Irwin (died 1874) married Cynthia Duncan (parents not named) b. KY died 1872 - had 5 children - Most show as dau of John & Sally but married to Robert Irwin vs William Irwin). Find A Grave Memorial# 53259299 Cynthia Duncan.
(Unproven) That this George Duncan[5] is related to James Duncan, in any way, other than proximity in the 1850 census. George Duncan, born 1805 KY; in Russell Co. KY 1829-1838 (tax lists); married 1st Faney Stanton on 10 Feb. 1833 in Russell Co. KY; in Russell Co. KY 1840 (pg. 26, no adult female); Faney Stanton died before 1840; she may have been the daughter of William Stanton who was in Russell Co. KY 1850 (pg. 240) as the household of William Stanton 80 VA, Phebe 70 VA, various Stanton children or grandchildren, and three Duncan children. married 2nd Susan Eden (b. 1820 KY) on 31 May 1842 in Russell Co. KY; in Russell Co. KY 1850 (pg. 236).
