Biography

Margaret Dunkin was born on April 25, 1857 in Carroll County, Indiana.[1] She was the daughter of David Dunkin and Mary Dillman. (The spelling of her sir name was changed to Duncan by later generations). She was the 2nd child of 6 children. At age 12, she was in her parent's home in Carrollton Twp., Carroll county, Indiana, along with her 5 siblings.[2]

She married James T. Hopper (1848 - 1899) on Feb 15 1877, in Howard County, Indiana[3] They had 4 Children:

  1. Gertrude 'May' (Hopper) Street (1878-1931)[4]
  2. Clara Belle (Hopper) Lee (1880-1952)
  3. Bertha Carilla (Hopper) Henry (1889-1936)
  4. Glenn E Hopper (1897-1971)

They started out on their Farm in Monroe, Howard County, Indiana, where in 1880 they had their first born, May age 1 in the home.[5]

Her husband James Thomas passed away on August 11, 1899, in West Middleton, Indiana, at the age of 50. They had been married 22 years.

Widowed, she was living in Harrison Twp., Howard County, Indiana in 1900, with her daughter's, Gertrude-22, Clara-20, Bertha-11, and son, Glen age 3 in the home.[6] In 1920, her son Glen-22 was in the home with her.[7] Glen was working as a laborer in a 'Factory.

She died on March 20, 1935, at the age of 77, in West Middleton, Howard County, Indiana, and was buried in the Friends Cemetery, New London, Howard County, Indiana.[1]

Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Hopper, age 77, a resident of West Middleton for many years, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday of pneumonia at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha C. Henry, in Ervin township. She became ill Friday noon.
Mrs. Hopper was born in Carroll county, April 25, 1857, the daughter of David and Mary Duncan. She was married to James T. Hopper Feb 15 1876. He died on Aug. 11, 1899.
Mrs. Hopper was a member of the West Middleton Methodist church.
Surviving are three children: Mrs. Clara B. Lee, of South Bend; Mrs. Henry; and Glenn Hopper, of Ft. Wayne. There are 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Three sisters and a brother are alsoliving. Mrs. Abbie Stratton, of West Middleton, Mrs. Laura Poole of Anderson, Mrs. Emma Brubaker, of Kokomo, and Charles O Duncan, of Los Angeles, CA.
The body will be taken from the home of Mrs. Henry to the home of Mrs. Hopper in West Middleton Thursday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the West Middleton M.E. Church with the Rev C.E. Thomas in charge. The body will be taken to the church an hour before the services so that friends may view the remains. Burial will be held in the New London cemetery.
