Biography

Birth

Marshall Duncan was born in 1710 and died in May 1777. He was married to Mary Ann Durron.[1]

Actual parents are known now. The father of Marshall is William Robert Duncan II. His mother is either Margaret Murdo or Ruth Rawley; there are two sources of documentation citing Ruth Rawley as Marshall's mother. [2][3] Marshall was christened as John Robert Marshall Duncan. He has since become known as Marshal Duncan I or Marshall Duncan, the Elder. His DNA haplogroup is R-BY75435.

Marshall was married prior to 1739 to Mary Ann (Durron) last name unproven/unsourced. Whilst the Durron name has not been proven or sourced, it is a given that years ago Scottish women often gave one or more of her children her maiden surname as a second name at birth. John, Rice, and Joseph all have Durron as a second name.

Marshall died in 1777, Surry Co. NC (vs Death; 1777; Snow Creek Cemetery, Surry, North Carolina). His will named his wife Mary Ann and his eleven children.

Research Notes

(You may read things here that have been proven or disproven) No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure . These dates need further research/clarification before taken as "fact". "Marshall Duncan I" (the Elder), was probably born about 1700-1710. The consensus is that it was about 1705 in Prince William Co. VA. Actual Parents are Unknown Parents have been found ~ Anonymous Macy-Angell

DNA Results

  • Current DNA evidence seems to indicate that (Rev William and Ruth) and the Marshall Duncan lines ARE related:
  • is definitely related to John Duncan (Sr.) of Fauquier Co. VA in 1769, (the father of John Duncan who married Dinah Bradford)
  • mutual ancestor Unknown, (but should be within 1-2 generations.
  • both of them appear to be related to John Duncan (Sr.) of Randolph Co. NC, (father of Charles Duncan born there in 1766 m. Elizabeth Allred)
  • descendants of Thomas Duncan of Cumberland Co. PA, (who had six sons), does not appear to match this DNA.

There is a Y-DNA study published in the Clan Donnachaidh 2016 Clan Annual which shows that the genetic profiles of descendants of Marshall Duncan match those of descendants of Duncans and McConechys (various spellings) living on on the island of Bute, Scotland. I have the magazine.

The Undetermined Issues

Is Marshall Duncan the Elder related to the Duncans of Fauquier Co. VA? There was a Rice Duncan in Fauquier Co. VA connected to a Marr family; Marshall leased land from Daniel Marr; and a Rice Duncan from Fauquier Co. VA was in Granville Co. NC 1762, (where Marshall was on the 1751 tax list).

Timeline

1739 – Prince William Co VA The first entry located was a 1739 Land Transaction in Prince William County. Daniel Marr leased 100 acres of land to Marshall Duncan, his wife Ann, and his son John. [5]

1741 - Prince William Co VA Marshall Duncan was listed as a voter in the Election of Burgesses for the County of Prince William in 1741,[6].

1742- Granville Co NC Undated tax list as "Marshall Doncom, 2" (tithables) and on the next line, "John (blank), 0" tithables, in North Carolina on the Dan River (probably before 1751.[7]

1751 Tax list on the Dan River, as "Marshall Doncom; John Doncom, 2". This area actually may have been in what was Rowan Co. NC by 1753, but Rowan Co. is said to have been formed from Anson Co. rather than Granville.

1764 - Rowan Co NC (later Surry Co. then Stokes Co.) Marshall was Bondsman for the marriage of his son Marshall (born about 1739 Prince William Co. VA; married Betsey Denston Rogers, Rowan Co. NC)

1768 - Rowan Co NC Marshall on tax list in Rowan Co. NC in the Townfork and Upper Dan River district, (list of Jacob Laesch as "Marshal Dunckam Sen & sons Willm, Thom, Reis, Charls & Joseph, 6" (tithables); separate listings for "John Dunkam Constable - but for Nathan Carther, 1"; and for "Marshal Dunkam jun, 1"[8]

1771 - Surry Co NC On Tax lists in Surry Co. NC in 1771, 1772, and 1774 [9].

1772 Mentioned in records of the Moravians "As the Tannery cannot well do without lime and Marshal Duncan will not burn anymore, Br. Herbst will see whether Duncan will not let him burn lime there." [10]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Marshall by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Marshall:

I corresponded for many many years with Mary Ann Duncan and purchased one of her publications. She went to Salt Lake City for many years and found many documents for her publications. She was an extraordinary researcher. However, I was told by many good researchers that finding documents in the south was very difficult because of so many wars and tornados and other natural calamities. She did a tough job but did amazing in spite of the difficulties.

Randomly chose a couple of extras here which appear to be related to to Marshall and I believe Marshall is related to Peter as well because all the markers match until you get closer to the end which I think may be where the mother's DNA influence changes things a bit. At this point, I am willing to bet that if Peter Duncan has a son named John he is likely Marshall's father. Unfortunately all the John Duncans tested were after Marshall's birthdate. But we can't rely on my amateur DNA analysis so back to the books!

Can you please provide a "viewable link" or add a picture of the Christening record re John Robert Marshall Duncan -- as an additional source.

(please add description/transcript of where located/register name/page, parents named, etc.)

At this time I do not have a christening record. I agree it is necessary. These are links I have found which you have likely seen before. I am sharing these anyway because as you know I am trying to hone in on Marshall's parentage. We were looking at - and dismissing - Peter Duncan and John Duncan but William Duncan is very much looking more like the one. The problem is more now - who will be the mother. Margaret Murdo/McMurde seems to be assumed more than others.

This is a link to a decent FamilySearch Marshall Duncan profile/tree: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/portrait/LBXZ-636

An Ancestry link to a Geneanet community "Source" [no source proof, really] This has Ruth Rawley as the mother of Marshall Duncan https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/4973074881:62476

Another Ancestry link to Geneanet source with Margaret McMurdo as Marshall's mother and with Marshall's presumed full name: John Marshall Robert Duncan https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/5111199553:62476

None of these agree apart from Marshall's father being William. And I have seen yet another tree with Lady Elizabeth Jenkins as Marshall's mother. And what would be funny if this wasn't so serious is that given her birth year to Marshall's would have her at 50 when he was born. Not happening in those days. So, I think we can discount her right here and now.

I will be digging some more. I have some emails out to a few people who might be helpful. I will send you whatever I can find if it is worthwhile.

Note: Possible parent relationship error on Dec 21 2016 (attachment of Duncan-5155 ). No comment notes or source supporting change). More likely some relationship to Duncan-4823 or Duncan-100. Please review at your convenience and change if appropriate. Good work, Sandy. I have been looking at the naming pattern above of Marshall's first three sons. They are William, John, and Marshall. I'm 99.9% positive that this will prove itself out in due course that William is named for Marshall's grandfather, John is so-named for Mary Ann's father, and obviously, Marshall is named for Marshall, the Elder. This is how the Scottish name their sons:

The traditional patterns used when naming Scottish boys were as follows:

The family's first son was named after his paternal grandfather [William] The second son was named after his maternal grandfather [John, Mary Ann's father] The third son was usually named after his father [Marshall]

Maybe we should concentrate on finding those gentlemen...or I suppose, maybe *I* should, ha ha...

I went through each Duncan carefully and did not find a Duncan-4823 or Duncan-100. And, thank you for the link, I have it bookmarked in my Duncan folder. Will take a closer look at Duncan-5155.

And, right away I see that "Lady" Elizabeth Jenkins [Jenkins-1233] is no "Lady" - she was born in the American colonies and she was probably married to John Duncan so it is stated anyway.

Hi Michael, Welcome to WikiTree. It appears you have inadvertently created some Duncan Duplicates. I will propose some merges for you to existing profiles. Duncan Dups have pretty much been cleared up to the 1750's so be sure to check to see if already existing.
