James served as a private in the Virginia Continental Line, and later as a Lieutenant in a battalion of Minutemen and Georgia Militia from Wilkes County GA under Colonel Elijah Clarke. [2]
James removed to North Carolina during the British occupation of Georgia. According to his obituary "his funeral was solemnized with military honors by the Volunteer Corps of Milledgeville" (Baldwin County Georgia).
