In 1740, the Campbells, Culbertsons, Duncans, Reynoldses, Rippeys, McCalls, Dunlaps, Pipers and Lowerys were among the leading families of Shippensburgh.

In February, 1763, Mr. Shippen issued the first deeds or leases to purchasers of lots in Shippensburg, and to those who had previously settled upon the lots. Samuel Duncan listed as purchased Lot 55. It appears brothers William, Daniel and David were also among the early purchasers.

Daniel Duncan acquired lots 32, 38, 40, 120, 121 and built a stone house on Lot 52, in which he kept a store and tavern. His son Stephen represented the county in the Colonial Legislature. William acquired Lot 95 and David acquired Lot 170.

Letters of Administration upon his estate were granted September 5th 1778, to his brother William Duncan. (pg 76) These transcripts were not located.
