In the year 1752, 3 years previous to BRADDOCK's defeat, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, named JOHN DUNCAN, removed from Pennsylvania to this section of the country and settled on a creek, which still bears his name. At that time, he was the highest settler, by 10 miles, on the Fork between the Broad and Saluda Rivers -- his nearest neighbor was Jacob Pennington, on the Enoree River below -- who is said to have been the only man, in the District, at that time, with negro, waggon, or still."
Pg.652-653: "'James DUNCAN,' says MILLS, in a note, 'the son of the first settler, is the gentleman, who communicated many of the interesting particulars connected with the first settlement of this district. He was a young man when he came to the province, was through the whole of Col. Grant's war with the Indians, the war with them in 1776 and 1777, and in the revolutionary war. In the early settlement of the country, he followed hunting for seven years. His grounds embraced the whole country, the Catawba and Saluda Rivers, up to and among the mountains. This venerable and interesting character is still living.' (1826).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I acknowledge that I have been delinquent in responding promptly to your February 24 message. I have been busy resettling myself in the U.S. after a forced 14-month stay in southern Africa due to covid travel restrictions. But today I am quite astonished to see that Duncan-6033 has disappeared from Wikitree without my concurrence as the manager of that entry. How did you achieve that without my cooperation?

I don't have enough confidence that either Duncan-166 or Duncan-6033 are in my direct line of Duncan ancestors to concur with this merger, apparently on the basis of some DNA research rather than documentary records. I see little to no evidence that John, supposed son of Duncan-166, is the same as John Henry, son of Duncan-6033. The latter appears to have lived to the ripe old age of 104 and died in Alabama, none of which facts are consistent with my admittedly tenuous information on the former. I would very much like to become more confident about this, but at this time I don't concur with a merger.
