Origin of the De Kays Historical article by Martha M. Lawrence for The Sussex Independent Part 1, 10 September 1897 "Mrs. DeKAY was, one day, alone in the house with some of her little ones. To her dismay, she saw a band of wandering savages enter the open door. No doubt, she had heard many stories of mothers and children being found murdered and mutilated. The brave woman kept possession of her senses, as was proved by the fact that she noticed how carefully the Indians avoided a piece of carpet lying on the floor. This suggested an appeal to their well known superstitions, so placing a chair in the center of the rug, she gathered her children into her arms and began a rapid plea to an unknown protector, in French language. The savages listened in awestruck silence for some time, then led by their Chief, they moved out as carefully and quietly as they had entered, leaving the mother and children unharmed. The prayer was in her heart, although she later said that the words made little sense. The savages listened in awe-struck silence, then, led by their chief, the move out as quietly as they had entered leaving the mother and children unharmed.“
