This Profile represents William Lane Duncan, married Sarah Horton

From Bliss Joyner Kaye As best as I can tell, there were three William Duncan's who owned land in North Mississippi in the 1830ies. My ancestor, William M. Duncan differentiated himself by using "and wife Sarah" in deeds. There was William Duncan who married Vicey Colbert, the Chickasaw Indian Princess and daughter of George Colbert. I believe this William Duncan was the same generation as Andrew Jackson Duncan. Their land was adjacent to William M. Duncan's in Pontotoc County. It seems that William M. Duncan, Sr. owned the land where the Ingomar Mound is. And a third William Duncan whose middle name is "Lane" and who owned a lot of land in Tishomingo County and who died and is buried in Hardeman County, TN.

Corporal William Lane Duncan was born in North Carolina and was shown to be living in Pontotoc County, Mississippi during the 1850 Census.

He served as a Private in the 4th Regiment of the Virginia Militia and later as a Corporal in the 6th Regiment of the Virginia Militia (the same as Corporal Madding). After his military service he moved to Georgia where he was married and had three children. After this he volunteered to join the 1st Regiment of the Mississippi Territory Volunteers. It is assumed this is how he came to live in Pontotoc County, Mississippi.

He was listed in the Census of 1850 of Pontotoc County, Mississippi.

He received a Land Grant – Certificate # 9344 to purchase 165 acres in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. This Grant was dated November 16, 1840 and signed by President Martin Van Buren. On October 17, 1850 he received another Land Grant – Certificate # 22.1177 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi for 160 acres signed by President Millard Fillmore. This was 11 days after his death.

It is believed he came to this area, Bailey Springs, in Lauderdale County, Alabama due to illness and the nearby springs.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Scottish Naming Patterns:

The first son was named after the father's father; The second son was named after the mother's father; The third son was named after the father; The first daughter was named after the mother's mother; The second daughter was named after the father's mother; The third daughter was named after the mother.

It would appear that the William Duncan family followed this tradition, and if so, the name would be William M. , as is the third son. It also appears, according to this naming pattern, that William M.s father then would be James W. Duncan. It appears, also, that the tradition is followed for the women.

Note: Profile bio updates needed.

Looks like it started out as William Lane then changed to William M Duncan m Sarah Horton son of John Duncan 1. In line sources with links needed for Bio Notes 2. Each source given needs to be reverified to be sure it is William M source vs that of William Lane source 3. Info for William Lane needs to be moved to Duncan-5972 ( (m Rebecca Null) Regards, Sandy

Duncan-5972 and Duncan-7615 do not represent the same person because: The birth and death dates differ. A transcription of the Duncan family bible showed these dates. I have James Duncan as his father.
