Marriage

Reportedly William Duncan married Nancy Lillard. (This is unlikely marriage/connection originating from Unsourced Import) No evidence of marriage is located other than IGI Information.

Children

  • Nancy Duncan, (abt. 1797 - 1829), married to Isaac Wall in 1818.
  • Temperance Duncan (abt. 1796 - 1830) m Thomas Lillard
  • Elijah Duncan (abt 1799 - 1870) m 2X - Ruthy Goffa; Temperance McKinney

Research Notes

This profile is supposed to represent the father of Nancy and Temperance Duncan. There may currently be data from multiple different William Duncans.

Parents

Some people think this William Duncan is the son of John Duncan (1756 - 1827) of Hardeman, Tennessee.

Death

His death was recorded in this profile as 16 July 1849.

Annette Hampton pointed out in a comment that a William Duncan died in Rockingham County, New Hampshire in August 1849. [2] The William Duncan who died in New Hapmshire was 77 years old (so born about 1772), born in New Hampshire, and was a merchant. [2]

William Duncan in Rockingham, North Carolina

There is a William Duncan in the 1840 US Census in Rockingham County, North Carolina. [3] Living with him there was one male between 5 and 9, one male between 40 and 49, and one female between 30 and 39. [3] This would place this William as born between 1791 and 1800, so probably not the same William as the one who is the father of Temperance and Nancy Duncan.

A William Duncan married Nancy Callahan on 31 October 1816 in Rockingham County, North Carolina and might be the man in the 1840 Census. [4] It may also be a second marriage for the William Duncan that this profile represents.

The William Duncan who married Nancy Callahan fought in the War of 1812 and was living in Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1853, 1860, and 1871. [5]

That 16 Jul 1849 date of death for William Duncan may be coming from New Hampshire, Death and Burial Records Index, 1654-1949, and, New Hampshire, Wills and Probate Records, 1643-1982:

Death record: Name William Duncan Birth abt 177 Death 16 Aug 1849 New Hampshire, United States Burial New Hampshire, United States

Probate record: Name William Duncan Death Abt 1849 New Hampshire Probate 5 Dec 1849 Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA

I am wondering if someone got Rockingham County, NH, confused with Rockingham County, NC, and that these are two different William Duncans. It seems odd that the William Duncan, son of John of Hardeman County, TN, would be in NH after being listed as residing in Hardeman County in a 1828 land transaction.

Thank you for pointing this out, Annette. I do think someone probably got NC and NH mixed up.
