Isabella Geddes Mather was a real character, a fine character, strong, courageous, resolute, determined.... hers was a HARD life, especially at the beginning ... this Scots Woman from abroad. She is a realist, the real backbone of her family and of her dreamer husband. A trip to Idutywa Town, per Cape Cart & pair, Brandy and Whiskey, driven (later by car), by Aunt Poppy, found Isobella beautifully dressed, plus gloves or mitts, her cameo from her son Dick (Richard Duncan Mather), gold dangle earrings, jet beads, her parasol, and always a smart toque or hat trimmed with feathers and veil. A striking image of a beautiful proud lady comes to my mind. There is a HUGE oak tree at Gwadana which shades a large area between the present house and the shop. It is the last survivor of several oaks planted, the others were uprooted from alongside the shop during a Cyclone in 1928. Let us regard that enormous OAK Tree as a memorial to Isabella - a symbol of her moral, strength and courage.
