Biography

James Dundas was the son of John Dundas[1][2][3] and his wife, a daughter Douglas of the Douglas Castle, Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland. [citation needed]

He died in 1436[2] or 1430[3]

Family

There are 2 accounts of the family of James Dundas. One account is put forth by the Dundas of Dundas descendants proposes there were two spouses. The other account, put together by the Dundas of Fingask, assert a single spouse.

Two spouse lineage (Dundas of Dundas)

In this account, James Dundas was married twice. The first wife was whose name was not known. His second wife was Christian Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart, Lord Innermeath and Lorn[4]. They were married in 1388.[citation needed] Children of the first wife were:

  1. James, succeeded to the lands of Dundas.[4]
  2. Archibald, succeeded to the lands of Dundas, upon the death of his brother James.[4]
  3. Duncan, progenitor of the family of Dundas of Newliston. He was also held the office of Lyon King of Arms between 1450 and 1471.[4]

By his second wife Christian Stewart, he had 2 sons and 2 daughters:

  1. Alexander, succeeded to the Barony of Fingask, Stirling, Scotland.[4]
  2. Thomas, died without issue[4]
  3. Elizabeth, married to Philip Mowbray[4]
  4. Christian, married to John Sandelands, of Calder, ancestor to Lord Torphechen[4]

One spouse lineage (Dundas of Fingask)

In this account, James Dundas was only married to Christian Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart, Lord Innermeath and Lorn[2]. They were married in 1388.[citation needed] They had issue:

  1. James, accounts vary as to whether he was the ancestor to Lord Dundas[2] or he had no issue[3].
  2. Archibald, ancestor to Viscount Melville (by a junior branch)[2] and ancestor to James Dundas, Esq of Dundas
  3. Duncan, recieved the lands of Craigton, and later lands of Newliston[2]
  4. Alexander, succeeded to the Barony of Fingask, Stirling, Scotland.[3]
  1. Elizabeth, married to Philip Mowbray[2]
  2. Christian, married to John Sandelands, of Calder, ancestor to Lord Torphechen[2]

The following daughters are not included in Brydges (1812) or Lodge (1852):

  1. Janet, b. 1389 in Dundas, West Lothian, Scotland[citation needed]
  2. Margaret, b. 1394 in Dundas, West Lothian, Scotland[citation needed]

The other profile are just a pair of unconnected profiles. At this early era, there are not multiple people of these names per all the attached sources to the 2 profiles
