Richard enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and served in the Korean War.[5][4] He was a quartermaster senior novice on the aircraft carrier Bennington when an explosion killed 103 crewmen.[6][7] He also served on the USS Coral Sea.[8]
He studied at the Erie County Technical Institute after leaving the military.[9]
In 1957 he signed onto a letter with other students advocating for funding to expand the State University of New York's systems of colleges and community colleges.[9]
Richard married Lorraine McDonald in 1961.[10][11] They had three sons.[4]
In 1983, he moved to Florida and worked there as a restaurant manager.[4] He passed away in Florida in 1992.[4]
