DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Duncan-1012 and Dunkin-494 do not represent the same person because: These two profiles do not represent the same person. Duncan -494 represents Son of John Thomas (Duncan) Dunkin and Eleanor Sharp m Mary Laughlin Duncan-1012 is not a spouse of Mary Laughlin and the Erroneous spouse has been disconnected (Mary Laughlin-521). This John (1660- abt. 1780) is most likely (unproven) from the William/Ruth Rawley Family as a close relative.

Mother Mary, the widow of John Duncan Sr. married Obediah Ritch in 1844 [1] , and she is living with son Elihu in the 1850 census as Mary Ritch, age 80, and blind. Mary LNAB s/b Mary Laughlin merge Unknown-327254 -- into Laughlin-521 (info at Laughlin-521 is correct) Additional merge for Father John Thomas Jr (son of John Thomas/Eleanor Sharp) Dunkin-494 and Duncan-7853 are same (aka Dunkin used by this family until abt 1800's) (info at Dunkin-494 is correct) Thank you for maintaining 1 profile per person

I believe you have merged two John Duncan profiles who were 2 separate men. Duncan-7853 was from Spartanburg, SC, and ended up in Caldwell Co, KY....not Whitley Co, KY. He died in Caldwell Co sometime just before 6 Feb 1841. Two deeds recorded there, one on 6 Feb 1841 lists his wife Mary as widow and admin, and one on 20 Oct 1852 that does not list his wife. Both list all of the Caldwell Co John Duncan's heirs and none of the names match the children's names listed above at the beginning of this profile's biography. One of the names listed is Doctor W. Duncan, who is noted in the above biography as NOT being listed in this Whitley Co John Duncan's probate. These two John Duncan's need to be separated back into their original profiles.

Jerri, thank you for your note. I dug a little deeper in Caldwell and Lyons and looks like you may be correct there appears to be two John's m two Mary's. As merge cannot be undone at this point; I suggest the following:

(1st) Reorganize, cleanup and delete dups from Dunkin-494 to correspond to the son of John Thomas (Duncan) Dunkin and Eleanor (Sharp); keep children per Estate record. It is reported 10 children from this marriage - But only 8 identified in WikiTree at this point in time.

(2nd) Children Not On Estate record of Dunkin-494) be moved to the Mother Profile - Mary Laughlin-521 (New husband "John J Duncan - A History of Baptists In Kentucky; Author: Masters, Frank M. - name per Baptist records (info for John J looks to be estimates - No Sources - Birth 1765; Marr 1785; Death 1840-1841 Caldwell Co.) Need/verify - Sources and Marriages for each children (12 - identified) William Duncan: Birth: Abt 1796 in SC. Anna Duncan: Birth: Abt 1798 in SC. Elihu C. Duncan: Birth: Abt 1799 in SC. Death: Jun 1860 in Lyon Co, KY John Duncan: Birth: Abt 1802 in SC. Owens Duncan: Birth: Abt 1803 in SC. Doctor Woodard Duncan: Birth: 12 Oct 1806 in SC. Death: 1 May 1886 in Lyon Co, KY Pamelia Duncan: Birth: Abt 1808 in SC. Mary Duncan: Birth: Abt 1814 in Caldwell Co, KY. Harbard B. Duncan: Birth: Abt 1815-1819 in Caldwell Co, KY. Death: 1856 in Van Buren Co, AR Williford Newberry Duncan: Birth: Abt 1817 in Caldwell Co, KY. Riller Permetta Duncan: Birth: Abt 1818 in Caldwell Co, KY. Chittenden L. Duncan: Birth: Abt 1820 in KY. Thanks, Sandy, for replying. That old message board post is mine (JKTMC). Back over 20 years ago, I corresponded with another genealogist who had talked to the (then) Lyon Co, KY, historian, Odell Walker...author of the book "Profiles of the Past." He said there were at least two different Duncan families in Caldwell Co...one from Virginia and one from South Carolina. Mr. Walker was a descendant of Doctor Woodard Duncan, and he said that Doctor always claimed he was from Spartanburg, NC. However, there are indications that they family may have been from neighboring Greenville Co. I also corresponded back then with Mary Ann Dobson, and I have a copy of her compiled notes for Spartanburg, SC, and both Lyons and Caldwell Counties in KY. You may have noted that there is a William Dunncan and a John Dunnan listed in the 1790 census for Spartanburg Co. In the 1800 census there is a John Dunkin on the S. Fork Tyger river on page 182 near a William Dunkin; on page 183 there is a John Dunkin on the N. Pacolet ; and on page 184 another John Dunkin. This last John Dunkin matches my Caldwell Co KY John Duncan as far as family structure (2 sons under 10, 1 dau under 10). Even though John Duncan was then about 35 years old, there is no indication of older children in this household.

Based on all this, I am going to reconstruct my John Duncan and wife Mary, and separate these families back apart. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info Jerri, it helps a lot. I will go forward with cleanup tasks on the Dunkin-494 side to try and get these solidified. I am going to add you as a manager here so that you can monitor any changes that might go thru via your feeds. Feel free to copy any info/sources that you need to the New Duncan-16136 line.
