Biography

Father Capt James Dunlap

Mother Elizabeth Brick (former wife of Ephraim Worthington)

Isabel(la) Dunlap (1736 - 1822), dtr. of militia captain James Dunlap and Elizabeth Brick. Captain Dunlap eloped with Elizabeth while she was married to Ephraim Worthington, who "caused her to flee for her life."[1]

Two daughters, two sons of John and Isabella Redstreake -- one born after his father died in 1768:

  • 1. Isabel Redstreak, who md. James Smith Jr., son of her step-father on 2/21/1774.
  • 2. Marthew (Martha) Redstreak (b. 1753-55?), who md. Samuel Pedrick on 8/5/1778. He was a grandson of Roger Pedrick who came to NJ in 1662 and purchased 1000 acres on Oldman's Creek for the equivalent of 2.5 cents/acre. That tract embraces present village of Pedricktown, NJ.
  • 3. Francis Redstreake (1765-1840), who md. Hezekiah Lampson and fathered 2 children: John Redstreake (1786-1860) and Sarah S. Redstreake.
  • 4. John Redstrake (1769-1825), who md. 1st/ Sarah van Horn, 2nd/ Sarah Smith (widow of Jan Van Culin), 3rd/ Ruth Johnson, the mother of their 8 children.

Parentage
Isabel's parents have traditionally been identified as Capt. James Dunlap (abt.1700-1758) and Elizabeth Brick (abt.1704-1758), but there doesn't appear to be any documentary evidence that supports this. There is circumstantial evidence to the contrary: both James and Elizabeth died testate, and both wills failed to mention any daughter named Isabel.

There is, however, another possible couple: Francis and Isabel Dunlap. They attended the same church as Capt. James and Elizabeth (they were, therefore, likely related, but it's not clear how).[2] Some circumstantial evidence supports Francis and Isabel being the correct parents:

  • There is a deed dated 24 June 1760 involving Francis and Isabel Dunlap and John and Isabel Redstreak, in which both couples jointly conveyed 25 acres in Mannington Township to a Mounce Keen Jr. of Pilesgrove.[3]
  • Isabel named two of her own children Francis and Isabel Redstreak.

More evidence is desired here, but my conclusion is that Isabel's parents were likely Francis and Isabel Dunlap. Tarman-34 00:44, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isabel by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isabel:

What evidence led to her being identified as the daughter of James Dunlap and Elizabeth Brick? I don't see her name on the abstract of either his 1758 will or her 1761 will.
