John was born in 1795 in Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky, the son of James Carnachan Dunlap and Jane (Willis) Dunlap. He passed away in 1867.
In 1814, John Dunlap migrated to Sainte Genevieve County later St. Francois County, Missouri near Farmington. John Dunlap served in the War of 1812, in the Missouri Territorial Militia, Mounted Rangers, 6th Regiment. Mining Country, 2nd Company, (Capt. Timothy Phelphs Company), at Ford Howard, on the Cuivre River, as well as Lincoln County, Missouri for the purpose of Indian pacification. He migrated to near Jackson, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri in 1820.
On January 19, 1823, in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, John married Mariah Key, the daughter of Elijah and Sarah "Sally" Collins Key, in that County by the Rev. John Farrar.
