Biography

The marriage of Prudence Dunlap to John Huff took place 13 Oct 1831 at Tuscarawas, Ohio, USA, signed by Jacob Cozad, Minister[1] Apparently the marriage ended prior to 1850, as the couple were not located in the 1850 census in Ohio. A son, Harrison Huff, age 16, was enumerated in the household of Luther Rowley, Harrison's uncle by marriage.

There is some circumstantial evidence that Prudence subsequently, in 1850, married Richard Dolvin (21 Dec 1792 Maryland - 10 Nov 1865 Newtown, Tuscarawas County, Ohio). In 1850, they appear to have been enumerated in Rose, Carroll County, Ohio. However, Prudence Dolvin was indicated as born about 1806 in Pennsylvania. Richard was indicated as about age 56, born in Pennsylvania.

By 1860, if the same Richard Dolvin (indexed as Delvin), age 60, he was enumerated in Newtown, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In the household was not Prudence, but Elizabeth, age 55, born in Ohio. On the same page is one William Huff, age 20, a saddler, in another household, that of John R. and Julia Fragur. William Huff could plausibly have been related to Prudence's previous husband. However, if the year of birth was actually 1830, this would be too early to have been a son of the earlier marriage.

One Elizabeth Dolvin, born 28 Mar 1807 (calculated from gravestone age of 60 years, 2 month, 13 days), died 17 Jun 1867, with a grave memorial in the Fair Street Cemetery, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.[2] It is plausible, but uncertain, that Prudence and Elizabeth were one and the same.

Thus, there is still some uncertainly. Further investigation may shed additional light on the various mysteries related to Prudence.
