Biography

David William Dunn was born in Margate in 1876. By 1901 he had moved to London and was a commercial clerk lodging in Newington. On 27th March 1902 he married Ethel Winifred White (1881-1943) at St Mary's, Newington. They had 8 children. In 1811 they were living in Stockwell and David was working as an assistant to a wine merchant. During WW1 he was a volunteer with the Croydon Sub-Division of the Metropolitan Special Constabulary (MSP), guarding 'vulnerable points', enforcing the blackout and manning observation points. He died in Croydon on 27 Feb 1919 with Influenza 5 days, pneumonia, no PM (Spanish flu, week leading to third peak of contagion) and is buried in Croydon cemetery.

Research Notes

Eight children follow before David’s untimely death in the great flu epidemic just after the First World War. Their first child Dorothy Winifred’s baptism record in July 1903 shows 18 Handford Road, Brixton. Hilda May follows in 1904, birth recorded in Leyton Essex. The 12th January 1906 baptism record of Ethel Kate shows 12 Stansfield Road, Brixton. Thomas William is baptised on the 19th April 1908 but his life of ‘Billy’ is short. A motor mechanic, he is tragically killed on his motor bike aged 20 in a hit and run motor cycle accident on the A23 at Handcross. He is on his way to visit his girlfriend – a vicar’s daughter in Brighton.
1911 census - shows his profession as ‘wine and spirit merchant’.
David William. He was also, by now, a licensed victualler. His family is not yet complete. Frederick Marshall follows on 4th September 1913; Alexander Wallace on 13th December 1914 and finally Eva Doreen (Eve) on 4th May 1917. The family has, by now, moved to 94 Lower Addiscombe Road, Croydon. David is also a special Constable. Not long after the Great War ends, he catches flu. According to family history, he goes back on duty even though unwell.
