While there is the possibility that John Ross Dunn came to America directly from Ireland, as yet I have found no significant source information.
I have, however, located a John Dunn who exactly matches John Ross Dunn's birth date, in St. Breage, Cornwall, England.

Whether they hailed from St. Breage, or St. Erth is yet unknown, but his ancestors undoubtedly migrated from either Wales, Ireland or Scotland. I'm betting on Scotland.
The Family Tree Book, indicated in the biography, states that John Dunn came from the British Isles. Ireland is just one of the British Isles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles
The children, indicated in the book, as well as events of his life in Rowan, are too similar to be coincidence. There can be no doubt that this is the same John Dunn as John Ross Dunn Esq.
until my GG grandfather Charles W. Dunn was evidently orphaned to the John R. Dunn family of Grayson, after 1850. Before that, my Dunn family traces back, every 10 years, from 1850 Troy, Perry, IN, directly to Calloway and Caldwell, KY, Pendleton, SC, Rowan, NC, and before that, I believe it was Kent, MD, without stopping anywhere, anytime, in Tennessee.
My theory of the John Ross Dunn family migration, from Rowan and Moore, NC does not include a stop along the way, at the first fort they came to, in, at that time, White, TN.
The Dunn family in 1830 White, TN, and the other Dunn families in Warren and Harden, KY, were not our Dunns.
My latest data on John Ross Dunn Esq. indicates that he was in Cecil, MD before 1700. The persecution of religions directly affected the separation of peoples, where they resided, as well as, to where, and with whom they migrated. My Dunn family is Catholic, and did not reside in Pennsylvania, made up of primarily Protestant.
I have much data which indicates that other famous families accompanied our family from Kent, MD, which was part of Cecil, MD, to Rowan and Moore, NC, Pendleton, SC, Christian, Caldwell, KY, to Troy, Perry, IN.
I am quite aware that the Protestant Dunn clan migrated more directly, from Henrico, VA, to Franklin, KY, and settled around Cincinnati, OH, and I also believe they settled in Grayson and Hardin, KY, but my Dunn family did not relocate to Grayson County, until
