Biography

Archie Edward Dunn was born at Vassalboro, Maine in 1891, the son of Jabez Dunn and Rhoda Grover. [1]

The 1900 US census for Hartford, Maine lists those residing on a farm owned by head of household Jake W Dunn (43), a farmer, and his wife Annie R (43), their sons Willard A (18), a farm laborer, Ralph J (16), Thomas B (13) and Archie E (9). The youngest three boys were attending school and have been in attendance for seven months f the past year. Willard does not attend school. Jake and Anna have been married for nineteen years; Anna has given birth to five children, all alive at the time of this report. The farm is owned free from mortgage.

The 1910 US census for Hartford, Maine conducted 15 and 16 Apr 1910 lists residents of a farm as head of household Jabez W Dunn (52), a farmer, and his wife Anna R (52). They have been married for thirty years and Anna has given birth to five children, all living at the time of this report. Residing with them are their son Archie (18), a farm laborer on his home farm, their son George G (29), a salesman at a general store, his wife of eight years, Della M (27) and their son Albert W Dunn (7). Della has given birth to one child. Archie did not attend school within the past year and George was out of work the week of April 15, 1910.

According to his World War I draft registration records signed at Hartford, Maine on 5 Jun 1917, he is age 25, born at Vassalboro, Maine on 17 Aug 1891. He is single, a resident of Buckfield, Maine employed as a farmer in Hartford, Maine. He has a deformed arm and is classified as III for the draft. He is described as being of medium height and build, with light blue eyes, and dark brown hair.

The 1920 US census for Hartford, Maine lists residents of a farm in Hartford Town as Jabez W Dunn (62), a dairy farmer, his wife Anna R (62) and their son Archie E (28), single, a farmer. They own their farm.

Maine Marriage Records list a marriage between Retha A. Morris of Buckfield and Archie E. Dunn of Hartford on 10 Aug 1927.

The 1930 US census for the town of Cumberland, Maine lists the residents of a rented home on the County Road as Archie E Dunn (38), employed as a salesman of household products, his wife Retha A (20) and daughter Priscilla W. (1). They rent their home for $10 a month.

The 1940 US census for Cumberland Center, Maine lists residents Archie E Dunn (48), employed as a salesman of household products, his wife Retha M (30), children Pricilla [sic] W (11), Patricia A (9), Burchard A (5) and Lloyd A (2). They own their home valued at $1500. This census asks the education status of the residents and informant Retha lists Archie completed two years of high school, she completed one year of high school, Priscilla has completed fifth grade, and Patricia third grade.

Social Security Death Index has a record of Archie Dunn, born on Aug 17, 1891, died January 1982, last residence in Gray, Cumberland County, Maine. He died at Portland, Maine and is buried at the Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn, Maine.

"Archie Dunn
"Gray --- Archie E. Dunn, 90, died Friday in a Portland hospital.
"He was born in Vassalboro, Aug. 17, 1891, the son of Jabez and Anna Dunn. He attended school in Hartford and had been a farmer for several years. Mr. Dunn was the Rawleigh Products dealer in Gray and the surrounding are for 51 years, retiring at the age of 89.
"He moved from Cumberland to Gray about 39 years ago and was Gray's oldest male citizen, having been presented the Thomas Gray Memorial Cane by the Gray Historical Society.
"Surviving are his widow, Retha Morris Dunn, Gray; two sons, Burchard A. and Lloyd A., both of Gray, a step-son, Dwight Robson, Augusta; two daughters, Mrs. John (Patricia) Bryant, Gray, and Mrs. Priscilla Thomas, Ocean Spring, Miss., two stepdaughters, Mrs. Carol Orozco, Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Linda Scott, Old Orchard; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren."
