Biography

Soon after the marriage of Thomas J. Dunn and Nancy Hackney, in 1813, Granville Co., NC, they evidently pulled up stakes and headed South looking for bargains in good, inexpensive land. They stopped in Georgia long enough for three or four of their children to be born before moving on to Mississippi. Thomas and Nancy were in Lawrence County in South Mississippi by 1820 Census, with two sons and two daughters under the age of 10 years of age. These were probably William J., David, Malonna and an unknown daughter.

Thomas and Nancy were still looking for greener pastures and had moved to Yazoo County MS by 1830 Census. Their family now consisted of seven sons and two daughters. The new names were John, Pleasant, Samuel, Hiram, Henry and Elizabeth. The unknown daughter had either married or died.

Their final move was to the Black Hawk Precinct in Carroll County, MS in 1840 Census. Thomas and Nancy were about 50 years of age and in the preceeding 10 years they had added two more sons, Nathan and Isaac, and another unknown daughter. In all they apparently had 13 children.

(Based on Census materials, Thomas and Nancy had four children born in Georgia.)

Mississippi Census indicate that in 1820 they are in Lawrence County, MS, 1830 they were in Yazoo County, MS, in 1840, they were in Carroll County, MS. The 1850 Census of Carroll County, shows Thomas and Nancy 58 years of age with son Isaac, 14 years of age. In 1860 Census of Carroll County, MS, the couple was listed as being 70 years old, living near several of their children who now had families of their own. They evidently died before 1870 Census.

Buried in Gray Cemetery, Carroll County, MS.
