He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1940. He joined the US Army in 1943 and served four years in WWII and another four years in Korea. Between his two tours of service he completed a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maine. He began his career working in dairy production, sales and eventually became a plant manager. For thirty years he was part owner of Donovan & Donovan, a vending and food service company in southern Maine. He served one term as president of the Pine Tree Vending Association.
