Biography

Chico Record, Saturday Morning, November 22, 1919 pg 4 col 3-4: Old Official Dies At Bay. Robert H. Dunn, Public Educator Passed at Berkeley Yesterday. The funeral of Robert H. Dunn, teacher, formerly County Superintendent of Schools, and later chief deputy of Assessor A.E. Morton, will be held from the home of his sister Mrs. D.W. Cooper at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon.

When the news of his death at Berkeley yesterday was brought to Chico his friends – and they number many prominent residents of Butte – mourned his passing. Dunn, during his active participation in public life, was known by everyone as a genial public servant to saw the humorous side of living as well as the serious.

Born in Daviess county, Missouri, July 4, 1876, he came to California in 1878. Later he returned to Missouri and entered LaGrande college, returning to California where he completed his education at the San Jose Normal school.

He then taught schools at Chico, Honcut, Oroville and Davis. He was then elected county superintendent by the largest majority ever given a Democratic candidate and he was reelected without opposition.

Declining the position of county superintendent of schools for a third term he was defeated for the office of county clerk by the late Col. H.T. Batchelder. He later served as chief deputy under Assessor A.E. Morton.

The older residents of Chico recalled yesterday that Dunn was popular even when he served as city marshal, for a short time in 1885.

Besides his widow, Mrs. R.H. Dunn, he is survived by two daughters Mrs. Marnell Farley and Miss Ruth Dunn of Berkeley, his mother-in-law Mrs. Narcissa Cooper of Chico, and two brothers James and John Dunn.

The remains will arrive in Chico at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon from Berkeley and the funeral will be held from the Cooper home of the Esplanade, between Third and Fourth avenue, on Monday at 3 p.m., Rev. Galen L. Rose officiating. He will be laid away in the Chico cemetery beside a daughter who died in infancy, and a son who died in 1894, at the age of 13.
