Biography

Note

NOT TO BE CONFUSED with William Dunn that was baptised 29 Oct 1660 in Cottered, Hertfordshire, England and married Elizabeth Godfrey on 14 Dec 1682 in Benington, Hertfordshire, England and whom had about eight children together, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FAMILY.

Many of the trees on Ancestry cannot have checked to see if the William Dunn from Cottered married and had children. It is extremely unlikely that he migrated to the United States, his last child was born in 1705 in Cottered, Hertfordshire, England. People did not make a habit of sailing from one country to another in the 1700s unless they had the means to do so. The Dunn family of Cottered were all Yeomen and were not financially well off, you just have to look at some of the Wills that they left, very little money and usually only household items were passed down to their family. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dunn-16838

In relation to the book written by Bennet S Pancoast about the Pancoast family in America, if any mention was made about William Dunn and his origins being from Cottered, his research for the Dunn family is obviously inaccurate. Without being able to source this book, it is difficult to ascertain where the information came from.

Dunn is a very common surname in England, in fact there are dozens of baptism records for William Dunn between 1650 to 1670. From the excerpt below, we do know that he was a native of England.

Excerpt from Quaker Monthly Meetings 1728

There comes to Signifie unto you that bearer hereof our friend William Dunn laid before us his Intentions of Transpoarting him Self to his Native land and former place aboad Great Brittainne it shall Request our Certificate Therefore.

Family trees are not sufficient sources for pre-1700 profiles. You will need to review the reliable sources on this Wikitree page that discusses requirements for pre-1700 profiles. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources This should have you find better sources.
