Biography

Alexandre Dupuis was born about 1737 in Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia, son of Jean Dupuis and Marguerite Richard.

On 5 September 1755, Alexandre was imprisoned along with hundreds of other Acadian men at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand-Pré. On a list of prisoners, he was said to live in the village des Dupuis and owned 2 cows, 3 young cattle, and 13 sheep. His property and livestock became forfeit to the crown, and he was required to prepare for deportation within 30 days. [1][2]

On 13 December 1755 he was deported to Connecticut aboard the Dove. He was married around 1760, possibly in Connecticut, to a woman whose name is unknown. Alexandre was listed on a census in Connecticut in 1763 with children who are not named, but no wife. [3] After the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, the Acadians detained in the Anglo-American colonies were finally free to leave. Alexandre, like many Acadians in exile, decided to go to the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) where he was recorded in 1764. [2]

On 1 March 1765, James Murray, Governor of the Province of Quebec, issued a proclamation offering free land to new immigrants. Between 1765 and 1775, 1306 Acadians deported to New England immigrated to Quebec. [4] On 26 June 1767 he boarded the ship Pitt, that left Connecticut, bound for Québec. He was travelling with Louis Fontaine, widower of Madeleine Roy, and their children. No spouse or children are mentioned for Alexandre. He disembarked at the port of Québec on 31 July 1767. [4]

Alexandre died in Laprairie, Québec on 21 January 1770 and was buried the next day. [5][2] He was given the age of about 33 years. No spouse was mentioned.
