Biography

JOSEPH DUPUIS is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 3 Right. Also listed as members of his household are Jean Baptiste Dupuis, Pierre Dupuis, Simon Dupuis and Marie Dupuis, relationship not specified, but probably they were his nieces and nephews, children of his brother, Antoine Dupuis, who died at Mireabalais, Santo Domingo (Haiti).[1]

Joseph Dupuis was born about 1736 in Grand Pré to Antoine Dupuis and Marie Josephe Dugas.[2] He was a boy during the Great Upheaval of Acadians by the British, and his family fled to Miramichi in 1756-57. From Camp Espérance, the refugees were taken to Halifax and released at the end of the war, in 1763. From there, a large party went on to settle in Spanish Louisiana.[3]

He was listed among the Acadian exiles in New Orleans in 1767.[4] He was in New Orleans with Jean Baptiste Dupuis, Pierre Dupuis, Simon Dupuis, and Marie Dupuis. Extant documents indicate that he had received his monthly quota of rations from the government for July, 1767.[5]

He married Anne Marie Hebert on 27 March 1769 in Point Coupee, Louisiana.[6]

Known children:
  1. Joseph Aubry Dupuis (c.1770)
  2. Jean Joseph Dupuis (1773)
  3. Anne Melanie Dupuis (1775)
  4. Magloire Dupuis (1777)
  5. Hippolyte "Paul" Dupuis (1779)
  6. Helene Louise Dupuis (1781)

He died and was buried on 7 December 1781 in St. Gabriel, Louisiana.[7][8]

I don't see any source here or on KTR's page for him with a source for "Jean" in his name, so I removed it, as was done by someone else on one of the merged profiles. We can always re-add when the source surfaces.

Dupuis-2106 and Dupuis-618 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parents mentioned in biography, same birth year, both are estimated. Both places are similar and Landry gives Riviere aux Canards as location. Same spouse Same death date and place.
