Sometime between 1820-23, Calvin Durand moved with his wife Lois Barnes Durand, and their two children, from Charlotte, VT to Clintonville, NY (on the Au Sable River, 12 miles from Lake Champlain). They had four more children, and two that died in infancy. Calvin engaged in mercantile and contract work, and was captain of the Clintonville Militia.
In 1852, the family moved from the village onto a farm about half mile from town.
