Biography

This profile is part of the Durbin Name Study.

Sarah was born about 1724. [1]

Name: Sarah Durbin
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 19 Sep 1725
Birth Place: Saint Paul Protestant Episcopal Church, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland
Father's name: Samuel Durbin
Mother's name: Ann
FHL Film Number: 13696 [2]

Sarah apparently was the first child of Samuel and Ann (Logsdon) Durbin. She was born September 19, 1724, in log cabin near Westminster, Maryland. In Frederick County, Maryland, Sarah Durbin, a daughter of Samuel and Ann (Logsdon) Durbin married ca 1742 Gabriel McKenzie (b. 1715, d. 1796), she died in 1795. 1. Daniel McKenzie b. 1762, d. 1823, m. Mary Ann Chapman. 2. John McKenzie m. Linda Porter. 3. Samuel McKenize b. c 1770, d. 1837, m. Rachel Durbin. Mabel J. Hopkins in her research in Maryland discovered several deeds in which one Gabriel McKinsey conveyed land to different persons in which his wife Sarah, figured or relinquished her dower rights. Some of the transfers of title follow: Maryland records of Deeds and Wills, 18 June 1754, Frederick County, Maryland, to James White from Gabriel McKinzie (called planter) land called "Small Addition", lying in Frederick County near the head of Little Pipe Creek. -- Liber L, Folio 452, Frederick Co. 28 June, 1769 for a valuable consideration to him paid by a certain William Buchanan for a tract ofland called the ----- on Gabriel's Choice. Wife Sarah relinquishes her dower rights 29th day of the same month. 23 Nov. 1785: Gabriel McKinzie and wife Sarah to Henry Hoover, deed of land called Mt. Pleasant in Frederick County, near Gabriel's Choice. Witness: Andrew Bruce. Liber W. R. 6, Folio 209, Frederick County. 25 April 1792: Gabriel McKinzie (called planter) and Sarah, his wife of Allegany County, to Leigh Masters of Frederick County. Liber W. R. 11, Folio 155, Frederick County. The name McKinzie, like other names, is spelled severalways. In Maryland the name is usually spelled McKinsey or McKinsie or McKinzie. But in Illinois we find it spelled McKinzie or McKenzie. But in some instances, however, the name is spelled MacKinzie or MacKenzie. Th08e in the younger generation spelled their name McKinzie. The writereo asked the wife of John V. Durbin, the daughter of Aaron McKinzie, how the name was spelled and she said McKinzie, and he exchanged letters with John and Gabriel M. McKinzie, sons of Gabriel M., brother of Aaron McKinzie and they signed their name McKinzie, also. In the list of Kentucky marriages we find that Logsdons and McKinzies have also intermarried, the name usually spelled McKinsey in Maryland. On page 795 of Fowkes' History of Christian County, IL in the list of early settlers of present day Prairietown Township among others we find the names of the elder McKinzie brothers mentioned; to-wit, Aaron, John, and Samuel McKinzie along with Pius Durbin, David and Andrew Simons and others. We find on page 775 mention of Gabriel McKinzie as an early settler of present May Township, Christian County, IL. [3] [4]
