Biography

Joseph Dayton Durbin was the son of John W. and Hannah Jane Head Durbin. He was born in Adams County, Indiana on December 24, 1870.[1]

He married Laura Aspy.[2]

Joseph and Laura's children:

  • Harvey Allen Durbin (B. 1896; d. 1934)
  • Harold Hugo "Hug" Durbin (b. 1898; d. 1982)
  • Herman Henry Durbin (b. 1902; d. 1995)
  • Ethel L. Durbin (b. 1904; d. 1928)
  • E. Irene Durbin (b. 1910; m. 1939 Harold Hoffman; d. 1997)

The eldest, Harvey, was born in Indiana, but Harold, Herman, Ethel and Irene were born in North Dakota, after Joseph and Laura moved there, along with some of Joseph's siblings.[3][4]

He died on September 11, 1938 as the result of injuries received when he was struck by an automobile [5] and is interred at Backesto Cemetery in Berne, Indiana.[6]

Death Story Excerpt

COUNTY DEATH TOLL MOUNTING
Durbin Death Sunday is Eighth Highway Fatality During 1938
With the Sunday morning death of Joseph Durbin in the Adams county memorial hospital as result of injuries sustained when struck by an auto, the county's traffic toll took another step toward establishing a new record for highway deaths.

Despite the fact that the county went through the first seven months of 1938 with but a single traffic death marked up against it, to date the number of deaths is identical with the same period in 1937.

Those who were killed in the accidents or died later from injuries: Bert Bears of Hartford township, August Leimenstoll of Magley, Jerome Gase and Monica Colchin of Decatur, Detlef Petersen of Fort Wayne, Laura Niehaus of Anglola, Mrs. Mabel Ross of Wren, Ohio and Mr. Durbin of Pleasant Mills.[5]
