FATHER OF NANCY A. DURGIN SUTTON
Born: October 12, 1804 at Rutland, Vermont.
MILITARY: CIVIL WAR UNION TROOPS.
He was a Captain of Militia.
He came to Daviess County, Missouri in year 1841 from Clarksburg, Decatur County, Indiana. He was a pioneer in Daviess County, a farmer, and a millwright and did much work as a Millwright all over Daviess County, Missouri. He was a strong supporter of Abraham Lincoln , and it was his wish to vote for Abraham Lincoln, but Mr. Durgin died on Election Day in 1864 - in Indiana where he was visiting.
Ahira Durgin was instrumental in laying out State roads in his part of of the state, and held community offices in getting Daviess county organized. He was a member of the Christian Church. His first wife
was Elizebeth Cones, who died early in life and left two children, a son John who died before reaching manhood, and daughter Nancy A. Durgin. Captain Durgin's second wife was Caroline Ford, daughter of of Robert Ford of Harrison County, Missouri, who came from Decatur county, Indiana in 1841. Their children were: Robert, Elizabeth, who married Solomon Hutchins, Mary E. who married Alonzo Thomas, William 0., Samuel, Lewis, and Henry Paschal, named after the editor of the St. Louis Republic, which was Mr. Durgin's favorite newspaper before the war.
