Biography

Irene Augusta Durham was born to William B. Durham and Beulah Idell née Aycock. Irene was their first child together, her half brothers William Allen Rogers (1870- 1955) and Vaughn Rogers (1874-?) were born during William's first marriage to Sarah Frances Allen (1850- 1874).

Irene married William Franklin Rogers in Falls County, Texas on 27 April, 1898, and they had eight children together - six daughters and two sons. The Rogers family lived briefly in Illinois, then many years in Texas and Arkansas, and children were born in each state.

In 1920, all of Irene and William Franklin's children were living in Baucum, Johnston, Oklahoma, in the home of oldest son "Joe" and his new wife Faye, and this is a mystery. William Franklin died in 1925, and in the next record for Irene, in 1930, she was living in Tulsa, working at home as a Laundress, and her youngest daughters - Johnnie and Nettie - joined her again in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

On 15 April 1934, Irene and George W. Lewis were married in Tulsa, and family photos show he is referred to as "Grandpa George", at least by Irene's grandson Victor Waldo. It seems to have been a very happy marriage, and there are many photos from this era. In 1940, Irene's daughter Nettie and Grandson David lived with Irene and George in Tulsa.

George Lewis passed away in 1952, and Irene lived in Tulsa and Okmulgee - probably eventually with children or grandchildren - until her passing ten years later, at 82.
