Zachariah Dutton was born in Lawrence County, Alabama, about 1821, the son of Jarrard Dutton and Charity McDaniel (McDonald). He moved to Walker County, Alabama, ca. 1839 with his family, where his parents are believed to have died; he then lived with the family of James Dutton, his cousin. He married Mary Emily Rushing ca. 1851, and was the father of four children: Sarah Edna Dutton, who married Jeff Burrow; Eliza Jane Dutton, who married Jacob Daily Lindsey; George Washington Dutton, who married Nancy Jane Beddingfield; and Simeon B. Dutton, who married Dicey Adaline Stewart.
Zachariah Dutton enlisted on October 1, 1863, in Company L, 28th Alabama Cavalry, Confederate States Army. By February 1864 he had fallen ill, and died in the hospital at Oxford College, Oxford, Georgia.[1] He is buried in the Confederate cemetery on the college campus.
Zachariah's approximate death date in Feb 1864 is determed by an inventory of money left by soldiers who died in the hospital, dated 1 Mar 1864, in his compiled service record.
