Biography

John was born about 1775 in South Carolina.[1]

Little else is known for certain about his origins, but he may be the John Dutton who was on the 1800 census in Abbeville District, South Carolina.[2]

By 1838, he had settled in Washington County, Arkansas.[3]

He appeared on the census in Washington County, Arkansas, in November 1850, and died sometime between then and 1860.[1]

Research Notes

Y-DNA Research

At least five descendants of John Dutton have tested their Y-DNA at the Dutton Surname DNA Project at Family Tree DNA, one of whom has taken the advanced Big Y-700 test. This test shows the John Dutton paternal line to be a subclade of Y-DNA haplogroup R-DF13, currently (28 Nov 2023) labeled R-FTC44638.

This line shows a definite match with a Big Y descendant of Thomas Dutton, also born about 1770 in South Carolina. It is uncertain how Thomas Dutton and John Dutton were related, but they may have been brothers or cousins. They likely had a common paternal ancestor within several generations.

This match provides strong evidence that this line and its surname are in fact Dutton and not Doty or any other variant. Several distant Y-DNA connections, including to men named Warburton, suggest linkage of this family line back to Cheshire, or otherwise (cf. Exley, Thackeray) to northern England. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

where is the connection from Dutton to Doty?

On Edward Doty profile 1599-1655(Doty-42) Mayflower passenger

"Doty's surname was not a common one and sometimes appears as Doten, Dotey or Day. In his will his name is spelled Dotten." Just to explain the leap, not to endorse.

Hi Linda. I need to edit this page but I've been swamped with other work. I'm the admin of the Dutton surname project at Family Tree DNA, as well as on the Dutton Wikitree project, and some recent Y-DNA work has proven that this James Dutton line is without a doubt Dutton and not Doty. John Dutton's parentage is unknown but Thomas Dutton Sr. (abt.1770-aft.1840) was another Dutton, possibly a brother or cousin, with the same paternal line. Distant Y-DNA matches indicate the line originated in Cheshire close to Dutton.

Dutton-2012 and Dutton-844 appear to represent the same person because: same name, exact same spouse on both profiles, exact same father on both profiles, similar birth year, same birth state, similar death year, same death location
