Lester Prentice Dye died at his residence on Jan. 15, 2000. He was born Oct. 29, 1920 in Carrizo Springs, Texas to the late Edward Riley and Ella Angela Pancake Dye.
L.P. was a member of the Methodist Church. He grew up in Breckenridge, Texas but had lived in New Gulf for many years, in Nederland for 9 years, and in Sargent for the past 31 years.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.
As a young man L.P. worked many different jobs, often 3 at a time. He sold insurance, worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, had rental houses, ran a Gulf Gas Station, and worked for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company.
He loved golf and the stock market all of his adult life. When retirement became dull and fishing, golf and gardening no longer completely satisfying, he worked for H.E.B. as a salesman and found a new love of life and people. He loved to say that he knew everyone in Matagorda County.
He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed by many.
Survivors include: his four children, Jane Ann Johnson and husband Dr. Warford B. Johnson, II and their children Warford B. Johnson III and Ian Andrew Johnson, Betty Karen Baker and husband Lt. Commander Joe Franklin Baker of Richmond, Texas and their sons Scott, Andrew and Matthew Baker, Mary Katherine Serrill of Smithville, Texas and her children John Stacey Serrill and Jennifer Serrill, and Sam Edward Dye and wife Tana Dye of Needville, Texas; and one brother, Eddie Dye of Chickasha, Okla.
He was preceded in death by: his wife of over 50 years; Edna Mae Birdwell Dye; and two brothers, Charles and Russell Dye.
