DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Regarding Theresa thunderbird Coffey's comment on Sarah Hays' maiden name being Dyer. Roger Dyer in his Will filed in the Will Books of Augusta County, Virginia Colony on February 24, 1757, says that his daughter's name at that time was Sarah Hays. This source gives a completely different parent for Sarah, but it does provide evidence for the Dyer LNAB. See "Alabama, U.S., Surname Files Expanded, 1702–1981" Alabama Department of Archives and History; Montgomery, AL; Alabama Surname Files; Box or Film Number: M85.0193 Ancestry Sharing Link - Ancestry Record 61266 #90012773.

A second look at the source I cited in my comment #1 below (Article 189 of Ashe County Heritage) shows NO reference to court documents. I can now find no contemporary records to support the assertion that Sarah's name was Smith Hayes or that her father was Abraham Smith James.

Ten years before Roger Dyer identified his daughter, Sarah Hays, the same Augusta County, Virginia Will Books, in the Probate record for George Hayes says that George Hayes' widow and administratrix, Sarah, was married to James Edmondson, May 17, 1749.

It is possible that there were two different Sarah Hays of about the same age living at the same time in Augusta County, Virginia, but I can find no clear evidence for this and so it seems unlikely. I think we should go ahead and merge Sarah (Smith) Edmunston (Smith-301563) into Sarah (Dyer) Hayes (Dyer-7855), keeping George Hays (Hays-2167 with all of his ancestors and descendants) as her first husband and keeping James L Edmonston (Edmonston-265 and his descendants) as her second husband. This may require a subsequent merge Edmundson-111 and Edmonston-265. Also if there is good reason to switch Hayes & Hays and/or Edmundson & Edmonston that can be done too.

The research I have gives her maiden name as Dyer not Smith, daughter of John Dyer and Hannah Smith
Here are some new sources which confirm or add to existing info about Sarah _____ Hayes Edmonston. They should also help to decide whether or not to merge Smith-301563 and Dyer-7855.

I don't want to add any of these sources or edit any profile data until a merge of Smith-301563 and Dyer-7855 is completed or rejected. If a merge is done then Edmundson-111 and Edmonston-265 will also have to be merged. I'm not on the trusted list for Dyer-7855 so I can't do the merge myself now.

Smith-301563 and Dyer-7855 are not ready to be merged because: First they probably do represent the same person, Sarah who married first George Hayes and then after George died at Kings Mtn married James Edmonston. The names, dates and places match well between the two profiles and between connecting profiles. Furthermore there are additional sources which I will describe in comments that seem to confirm a match. Two of the new sources however, give different Last Names at Birth for Sarah (Dyer or Smith) Hayes Edmonston, so either one source is wrong or there may be two different people.

Smith-301563 and Dyer-7855 appear to represent the same person because: Each of them married first George Hayes (Hays-2167) and then married James Edmonston (Edmonston-2650. Where they both report information, the two profiles agree on dates, places, and children. The one significant difference between the two profiles is in their FNAB. They both have a documentary source of evidence. But I believe the evidence for the FNAB, for Dyer-7855 is stronger than the evidence for Smith-301563 because the main source for Dyer is a legal document. a Will, written and recorded by her father while the profiled person was still alive, whereas the only source evidence we know about for Smith is a genealogist's research report written in 1931 without citing any underlying source. Note that Edmundson-111 should be merged into Edmonston-265 when these profiles are merged. I have other sourced data that can be added to this family when it is untangled.

I appears that Dyer-7855 and Smith-301563 may represent same person, Sarah (Dyer) (Hayes) Edmonston. And Edmundson-111 and Edmonston-265 also represent the same person, James Edmonston, the second spouse of Sarah (Dyer) (Hayes) Edmonston. A key source document, it seems to me, is ...
  • Marriage: "Alabama, U.S., Surname Files Expanded, 1702–1981"

Alabama Department of Archives and History; Montgomery, AL; Alabama Surname Files; Box or Film Number: M85.0193 Ancestry Sharing Link - Ancestry Record 61266 #12773 (accessed 4 March 2023) James Edmondson marriage to Sarah Hayes on 17 May 1748. My head is spinning from trying to sort out James and Sarah Edmonston and the manager of Edmonston-265 is unresponsive. Can someone help untangle this?
