Biography

Ordwulf was the son of Ordgar. The name of his mother is not known, nor is his birth date.[1][2]

Ordwulf founded Tavistock Abbey, Devon.[1]

In 993 Ordwulf was named as one of the Chief Counsellors of Æthelred The Unready. John of Worcester in the Chronicle formerly attributed to Florence of Worcester described him as "the first in Dumnonia" (Devon and Cornwall), although he was not Ealdorman. He may have been a reeve of royal lands in Devon and Cornwall.[3]

Ordwulf appears to have been literate: Ælfwold, Bishop of Crediton, left him two books, which would have been valuable possessions at the time.[4]

Ordwulf witnessed a royal charter in 1004, so he died after that.[2] He retired from public life[5] to become a monk at Tavistock Abbey,[6] so he probably died in Devon.
