Biography

Benjamin was a Friend (Quaker)

Benjamin was born on 17 Oct 1763 in New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut. He was the son of Nathaniel and Rebecca Earl of New Milford, Connecticut.[1]

He married Dorcas Benedict, the daughter of Aaron of New Medford, on 22d 3m 1787 [22 Mar 1787].[1] He had been received on request four months earlier at the Oblong monthly meeting.[2]

The family was received on certificate at the Danby monthly meeting on 9d 6m 1796 [9 Jun 1796].[3] The family included Benjamin and Dorcas, as well as their children Daniel, Amos, William, and Benjamin.[3]

Children

Children of Benjamin and Dorcas Earl:
  • Daniel Earl.[3]
  • Amos Earl.[3]
  • William Earl.[3]
  • Benjamin Earl.[3]

Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
