Anna Earnest was born 20 Feb 1769 in Tyron Co., North Carolina. In 1771 Tyron Co. was split into a number of counties and the name Tyron was no longer used. This was during the Regulators and Governor Tyron was not thought of with kindness.
Anna moved to Washington Co., North Carolina before 1777 with her parents. At age twenty-three she met the Reverend Stephen Brooks.
Stephen was admitted to the Methodist Conference at Newbern, North Carolina. He immediately set out with Bishop Francis Asbury for Lexington Kentucky. His first circuit was in 1790 on the Danville circuit. In 1791 he covered Middle Tennessee. In 1792 Stephen was appointed to the Greene Circuit in East Tennessee and while on this circuit he 'broke down' and located in Greene County. It was said: “He was not too “broken” or too “located” for romance; on 7 Mar 1793 he married Anne Earnest and settled down. Preacher Stephen and Anna Brooks settled in Greene County on a farm on a small stream near the present Stone Dam Methodist Church. Two children, a son and a daughter, were born to Stephen and Anna before she died on November 1, 1797. Stephen and Anna were on a visit to the North Carolina Methodist Conference and as they returned she became sick and died suddenly in Allen's Stand, Madison Co, North Carolina. Anna is buried there. It is said the weather was too rough to get Anna home.
In 1800 Stephen married Margaret Whittenberg; they had ten children of their own and a very full life.
