Judith Barnes father died when she was quite young. Her mother married Warham Easley, Records are seen with both surnames. She married John Wright about 1727 in Henrico, Virginia.[1] Children: Capt. John, Elizabeth, Nancy, Mary, William, Frances, James, David, Elijah, Joshua, Judith. She died about 1758 or 1760 in Goochland County, formerly Henrico County, Virginia.

Both names, Barnes and Easley are seen in the birth records of their children.[2]

Research Notes

Doug Rusmisel brought important information to the attention of Robert Noel Grant, who published the following evidence that Judith was known by two maiden names, her birth name Barnes, being the daughter of John Barnes, and also Easly or Easley, in honor of her step father, Warham Easley[3] The Records show:

  • Barnes, Judith & John Wright 22 Mch. 1769.[4]
  • John Wright & Judith Barnes a son named Benjamin born Mar: 22. 1759. Baptized 1759 Ap: 29. p. 55.
  • John Wright & Judith Easly on Lickinhole a Daugh: born feb:… 1756 named Betty. Baptized 1756 Mar. 21. p. 48.[5]

John Wright was charged with a tithe for Jenny in the 1746 Tithe list for Goochland County, Parish of St. James Northam. Jenny is the name of a slave willed by John Barnes to his daughter, Judith.[6]

"Will of John Barnes
To daughter Mary Barnes, items and negro man Peter
To Son John, Items
To son William, items, when of age
To son James, plantation I live on after his mother's death and likewise my plantation at Pickanocke, and land next to the branch above it, and items
To daughter Judith Barnes, rest of land at Pickanocke, items, and negroes Mingo and Jenne, when she marries
To wife Sarah, neg roes, etc. I impower my wife to let over the plantation I come from in James Citty County, and make good title to land, provided said Crawley will pay her L35 due on bond
Wife to be executrix
Dated 4 April 1720 Prob. 6 June 1720 Wt: Matt. Branch, Jr. Mat. Duprays"[7]

Later documents add: "Henrico County, Virginia, Minute Book 1719-1724, Court held 6 June 1720 (p. 29)
Will of John Barnes presented by Sarah Barnes, Executrix, proved by witnesses; William Randolph and Warham Easley, security

Court held 5 February 1721 (p. 155)
Warham Easly and Sarah his wife, executrix of John Barnes, dec'd exhibit a bond of Robert Crawley's and make oath they found same among John Barnes's papers".[8]

This is clear evidence that Judith is the daughter of John Barnes, not Warham Easley, and that she married John Wright. Her mother, Sarah ___ Barnes, married as her 2nd husband, Warham Easley between June 6, 1720 and Feb 5, 1721.

On September 17, 1747, at Goochland County, Virginia, both John Wright and his wife Judith moved the court for payment as witnesses in the suit of Laine v. Hughes. They were each awarded 125 pounds of tobacco.[9]

The 1748 Tithables list shows
John W[ri]ght Carptr Tithes 3
Jeffry, Jany
He paid tithes for himself and two slaves, Jeffry and Jany or Jennie.[10]

Easley-243 and Barnes-9794 appear to represent the same person because: Although the surnames are different, there is sufficient evidence that Barnes was her birth surname and Easley was her step-father's name. There is no evidence found that she was the daughter of John Easley-72. Therefore I have removed that set of parents and added the correct couple. Once the two Judiths are merged, Barnes-9794 will be attached to the correct husband.

I find no evidence that Judith was the daughter of John Easley and Mary Benskin. Instead, I find evidence that she was the step daughter of an Easley, and daughter of John Barnes and needs to be merged with Barnes-9794. See research note there.
