For the early part of Ann's married life see her husband Richard Giles-1727
It is likely that the last few children were not Richard Giles's children but the father was probably William Thompson who she later married. I guess the names of the last two give a clue there. Thompson Giles and Ellen Thompson Giles!! ds
[1]During the 1880’s, Ann and William Thompson moved from Gigoom to Howard and built the Miners Hotel (private) on the corner of William and Thomas Streets.
On 30th November 1883, Emily Giles married Charles Christensen at St Matthews Church of England, Howard; their wedding being the first to take place in that church.
Charles and Emily later took over the Miners Hotel from Ann and William Thompson who had built a house on the adjoining block of land in Thomas Street. Charles later built the Grand Hotel – he was on the committee of The Howard Jockey Club & later a Councillor on the Burrum Shire Council.
Probably after receiving the money from her father’s estate, Ann purchased a large block of nearly 50 Acres bounded by Thomas, James and Annie Sts, Howard, being subdivision 3 of Portion 25. Portion 25 was the 230 Acre selection taken up in 1881 by Thomas Watkins, brother-in-law of John Bevan Steley snr. For many years Ann milked cows on this block and sold the milk to her customers before they went to School – they carried the milk in billy cans and she had a pint measure to use when selling it.
William Thompson died on 18th September 1909 at the age of 68 years and was buried in the Howard Cemetery.
On 15th October, 1910, Ann made out her will in which she made provision for her land (which had already been subdivided) to be divided amongst her children. Subdivisions 2, 3 & 4, each of 6 ½ acres were to go to Richard Giles, Catherine Jane James & Sarah Elizabeth James (Catherine Jane’s second husband Robert Smith had died and she married for a third time – this time to Martin James). Subdivision 5 of just over 20 acres, was to go to John Thomas Giles. Mary Ann Steley had already received her block of 6 ½ Acres which was probably Subdiv 1. Subdivisions 5 & 6 of Section 5 of Portion 25, being her land in Thomas Street, were to go to Emily Christensen. One seventh of any money she had was to be divided between Archibald Currie & the 4 children of William and Charlotte Fulton.
The remaining six-sevenths were to go to Richard Giles, John Giles, Catherine Jane James, Mary Ann Steley, Sarah Elizabeth James and Emily Christensen. John Thomas Giles & Martin James were appointed executors and Trustees.
On 17th November 1911, Ann made a codicil to her will in which she revoked the appointment of Martin James as executor & trustee, and appointed Richard Giles of Aramara in his place. She also revoked the clause in her original will dividing her property amongst her children as it had now been transferred into their names. Her buggy and all her household furniture and effects were to go to Emily Christensen.
Ann’s second son, John Thomas, with his wife and family, had lived in Mount Morgan for some years where John worked as a miner. On 7th August 1909, John’s wife Ellen died at Mt Morgan at the age of 53 from Breast Cancer. John and Ellen had a family of 13 children of whom Arthur was the youngest, being then 9 years of age.
Some time after Ellen’s death, John returned to Howard to live and about 1915 he married a widow, Elizabeth Sarah Weatherston at Maryborough. John and Elizabeth lived in a house in James Street, and here Ann Thompson also lived for the last few years of her life. In her younger days, a tall red-haired woman who, according to one account, could “ride a bullock with the best of them”, Ann was almost blind at the time of her death. She always wore a large sugar-bag apron & when she had her daily nap under the house, she would use the apron for a pillow.
Ann no doubt lost track of most of her descendants, who, at the time of her death on 25th August at the age of 91, numbered 74 grandchildren & 200 great-grandchildren. She has been described by some of those who remember her as “a real old tartar”. She was buried beside William Thompson in the Howard Cemetery.
Emily Christensen had died on 2nd April 1924, some months before her mother & as a result, her portion of the estate had to be divided between her seven children. When the estate came to be settled, the total sum held in the bank was £116/8/4d so, after payment of funeral expenses etc., there would have been very little left to distribute amongst the beneficiaries.
