Biography

Daniel Eaton was born on 20 Jan 1639 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [1]"Daniel the son of William Eaton Martha Jenkins. These birth date entries were per the "Old Style" calendar and translate to 20 Jan 1639 as Daniel's date of birth.

William (of Staple, Kent, England), a husbandman, and Martha Eaton, his wife, are listed in "New World Immigrants," p. 58, with 3 children and 1 servant. The children's names were Martha, Alba, and John. Their arrival to the "New World" on the ship "Hercules of Sandwich" was "certified under the seal of office of mayoralty, 9th June, 1637." Daniel was one of two children born to William and Martha in the new world where they settled first in Watertown, and later in Reading, Massachusetts Bay.

Daniel married 1st Mrs. Mary (Ingalls) King (her 2nd marriage) on December 21, 1664; and 2nd Abigail Herbert on February 24, 1682. By his first wife, Daniel was father of ten children including: John b. 1665; David b. 1667; Daniel b. date unknown; William b. 1668; Ann b. 1671; Martha b. 1673; Priscilla b. 1676; Capt. Daniel b. 1678; Mehitable b. 1680; and Mary b. date unknown. No issue is known with 2nd wife.

Daniel passed away in Reading on December 17, 1695.

The date of Daniel Eaton's birth was originally entered from the Old Style calendar. The original date entry of "20d, 11m, 1638" translates to January 20, 1639. The Old Style calendar marked March 25 as the first day of the "Old Style" year. Thank you to Profile Manager Gregory Wood for this translation. The New Style calendar did not take effect in England and its Colonies until January 1, 1752. This comment corrects my earlier public comment.

In the "Genealogy.com" (Cheri-Thompson-California) source listed in the source section of this profile, I believe, identifies Mary Collins as the wife of the wrong Daniel Eaton. I believe Mary Collins was actually the wife of Capt. Daniel Eaton, who was son of Daniel, who was, in turn, son of William and Martha (Jenkins) Eaton. Father and son may be mixed up here. The 1st wife of Daniel, father of Capt. Daniel, also had the given name "Mary," but is believed to be Mary Ingalls per marriage record. Apparently, Daniel did, however, marry 2nd Abigail Herbert, but no issue is known from this 2nd marriage.
