Birth

Born: 28 Mar 1667 in Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Marriage and Children

Married: 1st -Hannah Pratt on 23 March 1691.
John and Hannah ____, Mar. 23, 1690-1. *Intention not recorded. [1]
The Vital Records of Reading do not record her maiden name. Torrey records this as the marriage of John Eaton and Hannah Pratt. [2] She is occasionally called in secondary sources Hannah Boutwell - the evidence to support this LNAB at birth is unknown. Hannah Boutwell could have been a second wife, but again, the evidence to support this unknown.
Married: 2nd - Priscilla Osgood, the widow of James Russell, on 21 January 1721/2 in Andover, Massachusetts.[3] She was born at Andover in 1681 daughter of Christopher Osgood and Hannah Parker.

  1. John Eaton. Born on 19 Mar 1691/1692 in Reading.[5] John died in 1724.
  2. Hannah Eaton. Born on Feb 1693/1694 in Reading.[6] She married Edward Hircome on 21 July 1720.[7]
  3. Thomas Eaton. Born on 19 March 1695/1696 in Reading.[8] He married Mary Gowing on 24 January 1721/2 in Lynn, Massachusetts.[9] Thomas died on 3 March 1735 in Reading.[10]
  4. Hefsabeth Eaton. Born on 26 Sep 1698 in Reading.[citation needed] She died 6 December 1698 in Reading.[11]
  5. Timothy Eaton. Born on 14 Dec 1699 in Reading.[12] He married Mary Delver on 9 February 1727 in Reading.[13]
  6. Israel Eaton. Born on 3 May 1702 in Reading.[14] He married Diadem Howard on 21 June 1726 in Reading.[15]
  7. Hepzibah Eaton. Born on about 1704 in Reading.
  8. Paul Eaton. Born on 8 Oct 1706 in Reading.[16] His guardianship papers say he was in his twenty first year in 1727 and in his Sixteenth year in 1735.[17] Paul died 1735.
  9. Silas. Born on 14 June 1709 in Reading. Named in his father's estate. His guardianship papers say he was in his nineteenth year in 1735.[18] He married Jerusha Gould of Andover on 5 September 1736 in Reading.[19] Silas died testate in 1745. The administration of his estate and guardianship orders refers to his wife Jerusha and children Jerusha, Deborah, Hannah, and Sarah.[20]
  10. Ebenezer. Born about 1712 (age 15 in 1727). Named in his father's estate. His guardianship papers say he was in his ninth year in 1727 and in his Sixteenth year in 1735.[21]
  11. Barnabus. Born about 1719 (age 16 in 1735). Named in his father's estate. His guardianship papers say he was in his ninth year in 1727 and in his seventeenth year in 1735.[22]

Died: Shortly before 26 May 1727 when the administration of his estate was requested. He died intestate but the administration of his estate is recorded.
Administration of Estate: John Eaton Sr. of Reading died intestate.[23] The inventory of his estate was taken on 20 June 1727.

Common Errors to Avoid

Incorrect death date: He is often said to have died on 25 Nov 1754 in Reading Massachusetts. This is incorrect. This is another error which can be traced to the highly unreliable History, Genealogical and Biographical, of the Eaton Families by Nellie Molyneaux. The 1754 record actually belongs to John Eaton who was born in 1723 and married Elizabeth Boutwell.

I believe this John Eaton died at Reading in 1727 (probate of his estate). The distribution from his estate includes eldest son Thomas and sons Timothy, Israel, and Paul all of age. There is daughter Hannah wife of Edward Hircome (so no married to Nathaniel Gowing to whom she is now linked), daughter Hephzibah, and then children still minors who are Silas, Ebenezer, and Barnabas.
