Biography

Charles Edward Edge is born October 4, 1841 (unsourced) in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He is the son of John Edge and Eliza Brettel.

In 1841, John and Eliza Edge live on Pope Street in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. With tme is their son Charles, who is 18 months old. John and Eliza's ages are given as 25-29 (b. 1811-16).[1]

In an 1851 census of St. Thomas (parish), Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, the Edge family is living on Granville St. John and his wife Eliza are both 36 (b. 1815). They and their children were all born in Birmingham: Charles, 11 (b. 1840), William, 7 (b. 1844), Sarah Ann, 3 (b. 1848), and Edge-407|Mary]], 1 (b. 1850). Also living with them is a lodger from Melton, Leicestershire, Bridget Curran, 40 (b. 1811).[2]

In 1861, the Edge family lives at Wheeleys Lane, in the same parish. John, a glass cutter, and his wife Eliza, both 46 (b. 1815), and their children Charles, 21 (b. 1840), a glass engraver, William, 17 (b. 1844), a cabinet maker, Hannah, 7 (b. 1854), and Jane, 1 (b. 1860). All were born in Birmingham. Sarah Ann (b. 1848) and Mary (b. 1850) from the 1851 census do not appear in this record.[3]

Charles marries Margaret Ready on 18 June 1863 in New Windsor, Berkshire, England. (The year and location are confirmed by this source.[4])

They have five children: Charles (1863), Edward (1866), Henry (1868), Alfred (1870), and Mary (1876).

Charles Edward Jr. is born 29 July 1863 in Lambeth, Surrey, England, and baptized at St. Mary's.

The family immigrates sometime after Charles Jr.'s birth in 1863 and 1865, and settle in Harrington Court, Colchester, CT.

Charles Jr. dies 9 September 1865.

There is an immigration record that appears to be a match for Charles and his wife: it is in the correct year, given the known dates and places of their children's births and deaths at this time. Their ages match those given in a future census. However, there is a child that does not appear again, named John, who is older than his parents' marriage.

Charles, his wife, and a boy, John, age 9, appear on the manifest for the Neptune, arriving in the port of New York on 2 September 1865.[5]

Charles Edg, 23 (b. 1842), is in line 491. He is a blacksmith, in the second cabin.[6]

Mrs. Chas. Edg, age 23 (b. 1842), a labourer/servant from England, and John, 9 (b. 1856), appear at the top of the next page. They are also in the second cabin.[7]

Edward is born 26 October 1866[8] in Connecticut.

In the 1870 Federal Census, taken 3 August 1870 in Hartford, CT, Charles Hedge, age 28, an upholsterer who was born in England, appears with his family: Margaret, 26, who was also born in England, and children Edward, 3, and Henry, 2, both born in Connecticut. Charles does not own his home (there is no number in the real estate column) but has $2,000 in "personal estate." According to this census, Charles is a US citizen.[9]

However, it appears he does not become naturalized until three years later. Charles E Edge, born in Great Britain and currently living in Hartford, CT, is naturalized on 27 March 1873.[10]

Open Issue: There is a Charles Edge of the right age who is a glass engraver, who appears in an English census in 1881.[11]

Alfred dies at age 15 (b. 1871) on 13 January 1886 and is buried in Connecticut.[12]
