MYTH's BUSTED

01 - Multiple Ancestry DNA tests by descendants of Andrew Edwards show he is genetically related to descendants of William and Grizzle (Coleman) Edwards son William Edwards who married Grizzle Ghee, all of Cumberland Co., VA.
Based upon 1765 and 1771 Cumberland Co., VA. land indentures wherein William Edwards 1721-1784 of Cumberland Co., VA sold 200 acres of land on Grooms Quarter Creek in Cumberland Co., VA. for 5 shillings in 1765, 1/2 of the same land that William Edwards 1721-1784 had in 1764 paid 40 shillings for 400 acres to his probable brother Andrew Edwards 1727-1775. Andrew Edwards Cumberland Co., VA. will probated on the 27 Feb 1775 references his son Andrew Edwards. Elizabeth Edwards his relict refused administration of his estate. In a 16 April 1778 Cumberland Co., VA. land indenture Elizabeth Edwards gave to her 'son' Andrew Edwards the land & dwellings upon which she dwelled with the proviso that he furnish her with good sufficient maintenance for the rest of her life. And a 1 March 1790 Cumberland Co, VA. land indenture wherein Andrews Edwards and Phebe his wife sold 50 acres of land on the Grooms Quarter Creek to Wright Bond. Andrew Edwards 1752-1819 was a son of Andrew Edwards 1727-1775 and his wife Elizabeth. The father of William Edwards 1721-1784 & Andrew Edwards 1727-1775 remains unknown.
02 -All of the historical documents list him as just 'Andrew Edwards'. Very few people before the mid 1800's had a middle name; so did he really have a given name of John? See 'Bob's Genealogy Filing Cabinet.
03 - The Revolutionary War pension application filed by his son Thomas Edwards in Laurens, South Carolina states he was of 'Cumberland County, State of Virginia'; NOT Hampshire County, VA.,
04 - This profile had' John Andrew Edwards' as a son of 'Thomas Nathaniel Edwards II' but no proof of same. Throughout the 1800's to early 1900's there were law suits filed trying to link Edwards descendants to Thomas Nathaniel Edwards I whose son Robert had a lease for 77 acres of land in Manhatten Island, N.Y. The genealogy for the descendants of Thomas Nathaniel EDWARDS (1690-1781) and Isabella Elizabeth DOWNING (1693-1785).... is questionable because of the "Edwards Estate Scams".... where thousands of people tried to prove they were descendants because of the 77 acres of Manhattan supposedly owned by their eldest son Robert who died childless. BIOGRAPHY

Birth

Andrew was born in 1753 Cumberland Co., VA. as his father Andrew Edwards 1727-1775 bought land on Crooms Quarter Creek in 1748 in that portion of Goochland Co. VA that in 1750 became Cumberland Co. VA. [1]
The will of his father Andrew Edwards 1727-1775 was written in April 1774 and his son Andrew was 'not of age'. 1774 minus 21 years of age places his birth by/after April 1753. And his 1774 Cumberland Co. VA marriage bond places his birth as 1753, not 1752.

Marriage

The Revolutionary War Pension Application stated " Andrew Edwards a citizen of Cumberland County State of Virginia, who was then married to Phoebe Meador about the year 1778," While the affidavits in the Revolutionary War pension application state 1778, Ancestry records [2] show it was 1774 Cumberland County, Virginia.

Children

  1. Mary Edwards, born 1782 in Cumberland County, Virginia and died 1850 in Laurens County, South Carolina. She was married to John Edward Scruggs in 1800 in Cumberland County, Virginia. They moved to Laurens County, South Carolina in 1804 (one of their children later married an Edwards Cousin-there were a lot of inter marrying).
  2. Betty Elizabeth Edwards, born 1785 in South Carolina and died in 1858 in Laurens County, South Carolina. She was first married to Andrew Wilson in 1810 and then to James Garrett. The settlement of her will can be found in box 142, package 20-1858 in Laurens County, South Carolina.
  3. John Edwards, born 1788 and died 1864 in Laurens County, South Carolina. The settlement of his will is in box 150, package 9-1864. He married Jane Bradley in 1812 and then married Rebecca Gilbert circa 1837.
  4. Andrew Edwards, Jr, born 1789 in Laurens County, South Carolina and died 1861 in Forsyth County, Georgia. He was a blacksmith. He married Leanna in 1810. He appears in the 1850 Laurens County, South Carolina Census but moved to Forsyth County circa 1855.
  5. Thomas Edwards, born July 6, 1797 and died 1862 Laurens County, South Carolina. He married Amelia Pickerell. The settlement of his will is Laurens County, South Carolina box 141, package 3-1862.
  6. James Edwards, born 1801 who married Alice Lindermirz.
  7. Littleberry Edwards, born 1805 in Laurens County, South Carolina and married Nelly Felton who was born in 1803. All the above information came from Joanne Ahrendt. She carries the Edward line back to 1320. There is much confusion about this family: Many have posted that they had a son Littleberry, born 1779 who married Nelly Howard and who went to Forsyth County, Georgia. That was a different Little Berry Edwards. Census records show Andrew and Phoebe's son Littleberry, born 1804/5 in South Carolina.

Death

March 1819 Laurens District, Laurens County, South Carolina, USA. Age: 67
Findagrave: Andrew Edwards 1752-1819 [3]

Research Notes

Statements made by Phoebe's sister, Nancy Bradley, and by Edward Scruggs in the 1851 pension application by son Thomas Edwards indicate the marriage between Andrew Edwards and Phebe Meador took place in the year 1778. The October 1779 Order Book entry recording her name as "Phebe Meadors" seems to contradict these affidavits as to the year the marriage actually took place. (Cumberland County Virginia Order Book 1779 - 1784, p. 76, 25 October 1779, "Phebe Meadors orphan of Jonas Meadors dec’d with the approbation of the court chose Jehu Meadors to be her guardian whereupon he with John Minter junr & William Hudgens his securities entered into bond according to law.")

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Andrew by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Andrew:

Edwards-25837 and Edwards-2061 appear to represent the same person because: Sane dates, same locations, same spouse. Please merge the two.
Would like to disconnect Edwards-1870 and Nicholas-1344 as the parents from this profile. Anyone have comments, complaints, or sources that might prevent this from taking place? Once the parents are removed, these two profiles can be merged.

I am a descendant of Captain Thomas EDWARDS and Mary Ann MCCLANAHAN. I have DNA cousin matches who descend from Andrew EDWARDS and Phoebe MEADOWS/MEADOR. I do not know the parentage of Andrew EDWARDS at this time. I think the birth location for Andrew should be changed to just Virginia. He was married in Cumberland Co., VA.

Neither profile for Andrew has an actual source as to birth date, birth place, or parents. I agree that the birthplace should be simply Virginia. I also think that both sets of parents should be removed as well. They can be identified in a research note box with an explanation and links to the different couples until such time as a source may be found to identify the proper set of parents..

Karen I definitely support removing the fictitious parents from this profile and this profile merged with the better-documented Andrew Edwards. There is no documented evidence these parents evidence existed whatsoever and they don't belong on Wikitree.

Unless someone objects, I'm going to remove the parents from each profile. I will leave a research note with links to the two sets of suggested parents in hopes that someday perhaps someone can supply the needed evidence for correct parents. I'll also remove the unmerged match and initiate a new merge proposal for the two men.

Edwards-2061 and Edwards-25837 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, dates, spouses and places. Parents of 2061 appear to have better factual support!

The parents given here are from the Edwards Heirs scam and can probably just be removed. The parents they are attached to have recently been removed from the Edwards Heirs lineage.

Robin, it looks like you've found already that Andrew and Phoebe were married in Cumberland County, VA in 1778 and as you stated here he died in 1819 according to his Revolutionary War records. https://revwarapps.org/r3262.pdf

However, there doesn't seem to be any evidence he was the son of any Thomas Edwards. Looks like his father may have been another Andrew Edwards, who had a will probated in Cumberland County in 1775. This Andrew Edwards is named in deeds in Cumberland County going all the way back to the 1750s. So this guy would have been born in the 1730s or earlier. See https://books.google.com/books?id=dKWgWaIq-hUC&q=andrew+edwards+cumberland+county+virginia&dq=andrew+edwards+cumberland+county+virginia&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj4re2F9eLlAhWCg-AKHfegDhAQ6AEwAHoECAEQAg

There's also a William Edwards in Cumberland https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.edwards/10764/mb.ashx

Can't say exactly where Andrew Edwards of Cumberland was from. I can say that he is probably not from my line (Westmoreland County) because we seem to have only one Andrew and he died in Stafford County in 1788. However you should check the Northumberland County family--there was an Andrew Edwards born July 2, 1725 to William Edwards according to parish records. That's where I'd start looking for connections to Cumberland County. Check friends, associates, in-laws, any sort of commonality, and you can get your ancestor off the fictitious TNE tree and attached to his real ancestors. Good luck!

This profile indicates 7 children for Andrew Edwards and wife Phoebe Meador. Note that Phoebe's profile indicates names for 6 children of the couple. The only names in common between the two lists of children are a Mary Edwards, and a James Edwards. The dates for Mary are not the same on the two profiles. The dates for James are also different, with one showing him as died at age 1 and the other showing him married.

The administrator of the estate of Andrew Edwards in 1820 Laurens was a John Edwards (probably his son). The declaration of Thomas Edwards, age 53 on June 7, 1851 in Rev War pension app identifies him as the son of Andrew Edwards and Phoebe Meador. Laurens County estate records do exist for John Edwards, Thomas Edwards, and Betty Garrett. None of these files actually name or show the connection to their parents. Other than Thomas and possibly John, does anyone have sources for the children of Andrew Edwards and Phoebe Meador?

This profile appears to be attempting to represent the same person as Andrew Edwards. It has the same spouse, similar dates and locations. All documents located thus far, (tax lists, census records, Rev War pension, and estate records) appear with only the name Andrew Edwards. The two sources listed on this profile show only the name Andrew Edwards. Is there some document, other than unsourced family trees, showing John Edwards as the name of the husband of Phoebe Meador?

Since Phoebe had only the one husband, it would seem that a merge of these two profiles would be in order. However, the two profiles are connected to two different sets of parents. A merge can not take place until the correct set of parents can be identified for Phoebe's husband. Perhaps an unmerged match might be in order, and research begun to document parents for Mr Edwards?

Edwards-10674 and Edwards-2061 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles are the same with the same spouse and dates in common. The wife's profiles were just merged. Please review & merge these.
