Biography

Sarah (aka Sallie), Griffith the daughter of Owen Griffith and Mary Hunt, Sarah is mentioned as Sarah Griffith in her father's will, William Johnson is mentioned as Son in Law in the will: "I give unto my Son in Law Wm Jnoson twellf pence for to Cut him of that mentionable my Extr for what I designe to give him with Daughter I have gave him Already."[1]

Sarah's first husband was William Johnson who died 28 September 1719, they married before 1673. In his 1719 will, he names his wife as Sarah Johnson.[2]In his will he mentions they had six children, he named his four sons: John Johnson, William Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Benjamin Johnson.

Sarah may have married a "Joyner" after 1719, but it wasn't Thomas Joyner, some sites have second husband John Joyner.[citation needed]

Time Line of Sarah'

  • 1653 Thomas Joyner married Sarah on 1 June 1653
  • before 1673, William Johnson and Sarah Griffith married before 1673, already had two sons before the birth of son Thomas in 1678.
  • 1694, Thomas Joyner died
  • 1698 Owen Griffith wrote his will 15 July 1698, mentions son-in-law: William Johnson
  • 9 December 1698, William Johnson testified he was fifty years old
  • 1701, William and Sarah Johnson sold 100acres of land in IOW
  • 1710 Sarah the wife of Thomas Joyner died 1 June 1710
  • 1719 William Johnson wrote his will in 1719, mentions wife Sarah
  • 1732 Mary Hunt, wrote her will in 1732, named daughter Sarah Joiner, note does not mention the husband of Sarah. (This Sarah couldn't possibly be married to Thomas Joyner who died in 1694, because she had son Thomas Johnson in 1678, father wrote will in 1698 and will of 1719 to William Johnson)[3]

Disputed Sarah's

Not to be confused with Sarah Edwards, presumed daughter of Robert Edwards and Rebecca, married John Sampson.

There appears to be several Sarah's alive around the same time. Profile Sarah "Sallie" Edward born 1622, died 1 June 1710, married Thomas Joyner on 1 June 1653. Neither of these women were married to William Johnston, whose wife was alive in 1732. Other sites, without sources, have Sarah Fulgham (1652-1727) as William's wife, but the will of his father-in-law rules that out.

Some sources say she died Aug 1711, others Sep 1719. The latter seems more likely, given that she was mentioned in a 1719 will, However, I do not think she lived until 1732. The Sarah Joyner mentioned in Mary (Hunt)'s will in 1732 was likely her daughter Sarah (Edwards) Joyner.

Inconsistent dates in profile. Says she married in 1649 but was born after 1681.
