Biography

Sarah was a Friend (Quaker)

Sarah Edwards was the daughter of William and Jane Edwards, who were residents of Middletown Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The minutes of the Chester monthly meeting show Sarah Edwards and her family were Quakers attending the Friends' Meeting in Chester.

On May 9, 1717, Joseph Pratt married Sarah Edwards in Edgmont Township, located on the east side of Ridley Creek, approximately five miles northwest of her birthplace. An early settlement map showed that the Edwards were among the first settlers in Middletown Township; Sarah Edwards' nephews, William and Nathan Edwards, owned land that was just below that of Joseph Minshall on the west side of Ridley Creek.

A note in the Chester monthly meeting minutes stated that on May 29, 1717, Sarah Edwards, daughter of Jane from Middletown, Chester County, was disowned for marrying outside the Quaker community. According to a book by Futhey and Cope, on March 29, 1717, it was recorded that Sarah Edwards married Mr. Pratt outside her community. This indicates that Joseph Pratt was not a Quaker, while Sarah Edwards was, leading to her disownment for marrying him. There was no record of her reinstatement to a Quaker community.
