As a youth, Rees lived on a farm east of Oak Hill, where he helped his father and brother with the farm work.[4] Later, he moved into town, living with his mother and a brother on Lincoln Street. In 1930, Rees was working as a salesman for a local hardware store, while brother David was a shoe salesman.[5]
By 1940, brother Nathaniel was living with Rees, who still lived on Lincoln Street. Nathaniel supported himself by running a private painting business; Rees was still a hardware salesman.[6]
