His parents are unknown. He may have been the son of John Edwards of King George County (d.1743) or James Edwards of King William County (d. aft.1756) both of whom owned land in Spotsylvania County in the early 18th century.

Evidently he appears in the Road Orders of Spotsylvania County, Virginia in 1755 and in the order books as early as 1753.
