Biography

Mary Edwards was born in 1826 at Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland.

She was baptised on 15 December 1826 at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland, parents recorded as Matthew Edwards and Ann Seery.[1]

Emigration: 1839: Mary Edwards was the daughter of Matthew Edwards, a convict who had been transported to Australia from Co. Roscommon in 1833, on the ship Portland. Mary, her two sisters and their mother came free to Sydney, NSW Australia in 1839 in the ship Margaret.[2].

Marriage: Mary Edwards age 15 married Christopher Nowlan age 34 , in 1840 in West Maitland, NSW, Australia. The Catholic priest Rev. J T Lynch applied for permission to marry them because Nowlan was still a convict. Permission was granted in August 1840 after the authorities received the written consent by Mary's father.[3][4] (The marriage is not in the NSW BDM online index)

They had children:

In 1841 her husband received a Conditional Pardon. However he was convicted for cattle stealing at the Maitland Circuit Court in 1846, and received the sentence of transportation for 15 years. He was transported to Tasmania.
