Family oral history maintains that Peter went to Rolla to visit a family member in 1865 and never returned. They believe he was murdered, but the body was never recovered. As this was at the time of the war between the Confederate States and the northern states of the U.S., his disappearance may have been related to that conflict.
In 1880, Malinda was living in the household of her daughter Mattie (probably Martha) and her family in St. Louis, Missouri.
